How to Audit a Site Before Buying a Link: A 10-Step Checklist for 2025

How to Audit a Site Before Buying a Link: A 10-Step Checklist for 2025

A link on another website can introduce your business to new readers, but a domain’s headline metrics rarely tell the whole story. Before agreeing to a placement, check whether the site has a real audience, publishes useful material and fits your subject. This practical guide to auditing a site before buying a link sets out what to examine—and when to walk away.

Why a site audit matters

A link should make sense to a person reading the page, not just appear to tick a box in an SEO report. Search engines may treat paid links intended to manipulate rankings as a violation of their spam policies, so buying a placement carries risk. No metric or checklist can guarantee a ranking benefit. Consider the commercial and reputational value first, and make sure any arrangement complies with applicable search engine guidance.

A 10-step checklist

  1. Check topical relevance. Look at the site’s main themes and the specific page where the link would appear. A relevant placement is easier to explain to readers and more likely to send useful visitors. A high-authority site in an unrelated field may be a poorer fit than a smaller publication serving your audience.
  2. Review the content itself. Read several recent articles, not just the page offered to you. Are they clear, original and properly edited? Do they answer a genuine question, or do they look like thin pages created mainly to host links? Repeated, generic posts are a warning sign.
  3. Look for a real readership. Check whether the publication has an identifiable audience and signs of active engagement, such as thoughtful comments, social discussion or a recognisable newsletter. These signals are not proof of quality on their own, but they help distinguish a working publication from a site built for placements.
  4. Inspect traffic patterns. If you have access to reliable analytics or third-party estimates, look for consistent trends rather than a single impressive number. Sudden unexplained spikes, a steep long-term decline or traffic concentrated in irrelevant countries may warrant further questions. Estimates can be inaccurate, so use them as clues rather than facts.
  5. Check the site’s history. Search for older versions of the site and review how its topic and name have changed. A domain that once covered a legitimate subject may have been repurposed for unrelated content. A major change is not automatically disqualifying, but it deserves a clear explanation.
  6. Examine outbound links. Open several articles and follow the links they contain. A site that links to a wide range of unrelated businesses, especially through repetitive commercial anchor text, may be selling placements indiscriminately. Consider whether the link would look natural within the article.
  7. Assess the proposed page. Ask whether your link will appear in a relevant, useful article, and whether that article will remain accessible. A link placed in a buried archive or a page surrounded by unrelated promotions is unlikely to help readers. Check that the page is indexed and accessible without a login.
  8. Agree suitable link attributes. Ask how the link will be labelled. Paid placements should be handled transparently and in line with search engine requirements; attributes such as “sponsored” may be appropriate. Do not assume that a followed link is a safe or valuable outcome simply because it is offered.
  9. Clarify the terms before paying. Get the price, publication date, content responsibilities, link destination, labelling and removal or replacement policy in writing. Be wary of promises of guaranteed rankings, permanent results or a specific amount of search traffic. A written agreement prevents avoidable misunderstandings.
  10. Plan how you will measure value.Decide what success means before the placement goes live. Referral visits, enquiries, sales and relevant audience reach may be more meaningful than a change in a third-party authority score. Record the live URL and review it periodically in case the page or link changes.

When to bring in help

Checking a prospective site takes time, particularly if you are comparing several publishers or need to review their history and content at scale. A specialist can help organise the research, but the final decision should still reflect your own goals, risk tolerance and audience. If you use freelancers for repeat research or related marketing tasks, consistent briefs and working relationships can reduce the time spent explaining your requirements. Osdire’s article on repeat work with freelancers explores how that continuity can help.

Make the decision on reader value

A sensible audit is not about finding a perfect score. It is about spotting poor fit, questionable publishing practices and unclear terms before committing money. If the site has credible content, a relevant audience and a defensible reason to include your link, the placement may offer value beyond SEO. If its main appeal is a large metric or a promise of quick ranking gains, pause and investigate further. A good link earns its place in a useful conversation—and your site should be able to stand behind the decision to pursue it.
