As part of their commitment to protecting the local community, Midland Fire has successfully designed and installed a state-of-the-art Category L1 fire alarm system for Lavender Lodge Nursing Home in Derby. The project, completed in just eight weeks, ensures the safety and compliance of this vital care facility, which supports 44 residents with a range of care needs.
When Lavender Lodge reached out for a fire alarm system replacement earlier this year, Midland Fire’s team began work within four weeks, overcoming the unique challenges of working in a live care environment. By installing the latest Honeywell Gent Self-Test detectors, Midland Fire delivered enhanced safety measures with minimal disruption to residents and staff.
Chris Eley, Managing Director of Midland Fire, said:
“Working in a live care environment can be challenging, but our team demonstrated their expertise and adaptability to ensure the project was completed safely, efficiently, and with minimal impact on the residents. Helping to protect people in our community is incredibly rewarding.”
Innovative Technology for Enhanced Safety
The new fire alarm system at Lavender Lodge includes Honeywell Gent Self-Test detectors—the first EN-approved detectors capable of testing themselves with real heat and smoke. These cutting-edge devices provide quick and effective testing while reducing long-term maintenance costs. The system also features:
- Gent Vigilon Plus 4 and 6 loop panels
- Gent S-Quad Self-Test detectors (S4T series)
- EN54 monitoring unit for fire brigade response
- Three repeater panels for local monitoring and control
The system is fully integrated and designed to maximise life safety while adhering to the latest fire safety regulations for care homes.
Supporting Compliance with New Fire Safety Standards
With new government fire safety regulations for care homes coming into effect in March 2025, projects like Lavender Lodge highlight the importance of proactive upgrades. These regulations mandate:
- Sprinkler systems for early fire detection and evacuation
- Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) for residents with disabilities
Midland Fire remains at the forefront of helping care homes and other facilities achieve compliance with these critical standards.
